Memory Flashes:

Listing to 123 while riding to school in Leon Eastman's '61 Bonniville.  Fighting for the right to wear jeans at school. Running across the diamond to the Minuette while cutting class with Neil Sohlin.  The swim team and hanging out with Larry Lebowtiz. Riding around in Larry's Dodge and paying $.20/gal for gas. I tell my 11th and 12th grade students that The Who appeared in my high schol gym and they don't believe me until I show them my yearbook. Riding to work in Bob Pullium's VW. Wrestling Mr. Finlayson in gym class. Art and I getting thrown into the basement by the greasers.  As a senior, I remember taking Humanities, and we used the "AP" excuse to dodge the hall monitors. We skipped school and went out to breakfast, lunch, or snack, just to get away for a moment. Geeze. and I am a teacher now!!!  Skipping school after 3rd hour in my 1966 Maroon Ford Fairlane & going to Burger King with friends & then to someone's house to hang out til school was over.  The WILD parties!!! Hanging out at the football games. Trying to stay out of trouble, but always getting into trouble. And of course, crusing Woodward Avenue. Experiencing another Kennedy asassination. Hanging out with Marcella Daubert and Marie Eddy. Being anorexic, before the dignosis even exsisted. Being called 'boots' because I wore the old-fashioned kind. Wonderful Friday night basketball games and the partying afterward.  Feeling totally prepared for college and graduate school because Southfield High teachers had high expectations and trained us well.  A field trip to Stratford to see a play, and the bus trip with everyone was the best part!  Watching football games with a crowd, wearing a "benchwarmer" coat (remember those?). The prom at Raleigh House was a blast. Going on the car rally with Gail Sherman and using a garbage can lid to layout our "racing emblem".  People stared at the car and someone didn't pay attention and hit another car.  I remember following the boy's swim team to the state meet and staying in a hotel (when I was supposed to be at Kari's house). High school was a fabulous time in my life, only to be topped by my years at MSU. The musicals, clubs, staff mentors, and lasting friendships helped to make me who I am today.  Athletic Office  Uncountable sporting events, Spirit Week - still have my shirt.  All my memories are good, life was so good. Finding out about Bob Horner.  Walking the halls of "O" building feeling like a ghost, wanting a cigarette and a cup of Maple House coffee.  Mr. Fishbeck's bowties.   Receiving demerits for wearing jeans,  being in line at graduation rehearsal when we learned of Bobby's assassination, overhearing all the girls talking about Roger Daltry's hips the day after the concert. Bringing a bag lunch.  Being too shy to have normal fun during high school. Friday night football. the prom.  Working on the scenery for South Pacific---I was ICOPT (in charge of palm trees)  Getting into arguments with Mr Bouton and/or Mr. Sweet in art classes Cruising Woodward Hanging out with Paula, Joanne, Howard and Bernie (being great artsists...) Memorizing the words to Hare Krishna in Jan's room  (also one of us taking out the side of her garage and two cars at the art museum)  Wrestling team, Marching Band, Lunchtime. Going to the SHS football games and the plays. Dancing on Club 1270. Dances at the Civic Center.  Cruising Woodward Ave., Going to the Motown Reviews, Eating at the Dipsey Doodle. Hanging our with friends. Being a WSHS radio DJ.  Lockers:  yours, mine and  ours!  (no wonder I couldn't find my books)   Driving my mom's convertible out to Cass Lake to go swimming.  Everybody  pitching in 25 cents - $1 worth of gas  would get the needed back up.  Trying to 'sit like a lady' in those mini skirts!   Bumming rides so I wouldn't have to ride the 'cheese wagon'.  Being told  to think about work instead of college  - and now I'm going every day!  LOL  Visiting our opponents' schools and having fun the night before the basketball games.  I never got caught.  MI Forever! Being out there under those "Friday Night Lights" Being in the safest place your could be in during the first day of the 1967 Detroit Riots: Camp Dearborn.  Not only did I like being in or going to all those sporting events, I enjoyed going to the Musicals, too.  Teaching Brinza & Elias how to drive a stick in preparation for our great Yellowstone '68 trip.  We're going back in '18!  Do you really expect me to remember that far back?  I missed the last reunion because I was in the Hospital for two months.  i had Legionaire's disease and my kidneys were shut down for three weeks.  I have been told that it was a miracle I left the hospital alive.  Our great senior lounge.  The fun we had in our crazy calculus class. Listening to people tell Mr. Brubaker stories.  Our great prom- no one does it like we did with the party at Alpine. Taking turns cruisin down Woodward Ave in my Dad's sports cars with my buddy Bruce Penberthy.  Going on the car rallys Hey Bruce I bet you still remember the 13th president & Pamm McFadden remembers the guy paying attention to us instead of driving!  The breakfast club---getting kicked out of Howard Johnson's and then going to everybodys houses for breakfast--when it was my turn the Lathrup police showed up too!    Hanging out with the swimmers in Mr. Scarbourgh's art class & having him write me a pass to get back into school when I was late for govt. class.   Disconnecting the odometer on my parent's car and driving my friends up to MSU for Friday night frat mixers.  Traveling to Yellowstone for three weeks to celebrate graduation.   Playing football and beating Royal Oak Kimball when we stopped them at the one yard line as time expired.  Mr. Kelley's classes and the chuckles we got when he used his favorite phrase to describe the administration ..."morons"!  the Who
Having fun in our school  musicals, Friday night football games, drag racing Bod Deacans and then losing our licenses, renting an elephant for homecoming ,  the Yellow Gerodas, track with Harry Elias trying to better my record time, rebuilding cars with Tom Unkefer and Jim Clark, trying to stay out of trouble,  with Bruce Penberty, being the only boy allowed in Nancy Sissons room by Mrs. Sisson.  My most vivid memory is the walk out and being up on the roof.  Cruising Woodward in my GTO. Running, Running, Running, The WHO was cool too!  Now I regret never dating the two most attractive girls(in my eyes) at SHS! Adored Miss Gayewski & loved what she wrote about me in the yearbook. I loved working on the 1968 yearbook with Kathy Andrew.  Skipped the Prom to campaign for Sen. Eugene McCarthy.  Never skipped going to SHS football games (and going to the Big Boy afterwards) Go Blue Jays! It's more than just a phase in my life! Before 1st hour in the parking lot, The Hideout, Slavik's Corner.  When we had a protest on the front lawn of the school with TV coverage, not having the Jewish holidays off school.  Concert Chior, Football and Basketball games, Proms and Homecoming dances, Homecomoing Parades, Kensington Park, Ski Club, Making out.  Hope you all have a wonderful time - with regrets - Pat St. John. Line dancing at the Walled Lake Casino, the Grande Ballroom, Motown reviews. My typing teacher's "raised" eyelids.   My house of church for Rosanna P.  Anderbutt's silliness. 4 Jewish White girls doing
a Smokey Robinson & the Miracles imitation at the Sr. Talent Show.  Baking "special" brownies in home economics. Riding in a pink mustang convertible as the orchestra's nomination for homecoming queen.  Dancing with Donna, Teaching Hari how to swing a bat. Graduation ceremony. In 11th grade, co-chairing social action project that raised money to send to children in a village in Tanzania. Graduation with honors. Dancing at the Hideout with Bob Seger. Interviewing Dave Bing and Mayo Smith for the "6:20 Sports Report" on WSHJ, the "neoteric sound of Southfield" (whatever that was supposed to mean).
